How long do you have to live in Florida to get a medical card?

The Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU) regulates the Florida medical cannabis program. The OMMU writes and implements the Department of Health’s rules for medical marijuana; oversees the statewide Medical Marijuana Use Registry; and licenses entities to cultivate, process, and dispense medicinal cannabis to qualified patients and caregivers. The OMMU also certifies marijuana testing laboratories to ensure the safety of Florida’s medical cannabis.

To legally use cannabis in Florida, you must be a Florida resident and have an approved medical condition. Chronic nonmalignant pain is a qualifying condition, as are anorexia, PTSD, severe nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer, ALS, Parkinson’s disease, and glaucoma. A close relative of a Florida resident is also eligible to serve as a caregiver for a medically-approved patient, provided that they meet the statutory requirements for such a relationship.

It is illegal to share your medicine with any person who is not a qualified patient. Additionally, you cannot smoke in public or on the premises of any school, penal facility, or on any mode of transportation. Finally, it’s against the law to work while under the influence of marijuana.
