One of the biggest producers of psilocybin-containing mushrooms in Canada is a company called Optimi Health, which has a 20,000 square foot production facility in southern B.C. Despite their reputation as illegal recreational drugs, the company’s head cultivator says they’re trying to contribute to the research that’s currently happening with these mushrooms.
While the cultivation of any mushrooms that contain psilocybin is prohibited under section 7.1 of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, possession of mushroom spores doesn’t carry the same risks as possessing the actual drug, assuming you don’t intend to grow them. However, the law still makes it illegal to sell spores under the CDSA.
Across the country, some companies are selling pre-packaged micro doses of the fungus. Some high-stress athletes in high risk sports are advocating for their use in the promotion of mental health, and Canada has recently opened the first clinic that uses psychedelic-assisted therapy.
There are also a number of mushroom-infused drinks on the market. The psychedelic water at Zoomers, for example, contains kava root and damiana leaf as well as 500 milligrams to four grams of psilocybin per bottle.
