What is a MUGA Pitch?
The multi-use games area or what is a muga pitch is an artificial and free-draining surface that enables sports to be played all year round. Unlike grass which can get hard and crack in the summer or flood in wet weather, our surfacing is free-flowing and durable enough to cope with constant footfall. It is also environmentally friendly, requiring no special chemicals or weed killers to maintain its appearance as grass pitches do.
There are various types of MUGA surfaces available, each offering different properties. Some, like the 3G MUGAs, have both rubber and sand infill which makes them ideal for football and rugby, while others, such as polymeric MUGAs, use coloured EPDM granules in a binder that is laid over macadam to provide a hard wearing surface suitable for tennis, netball and basketball.
Unveiling the Secrets of Muga Pitches: A Comprehensive Guide
Having a MUGA pitch installed at your school opens up so many more possibilities for sports. Not only does it help children develop cardiovascular fitness, coordination and social skills, but regular physical play can help to improve upper and lower body strength, as well as the understanding of their bodies, which can all be improved through a multi-use games area.
A MUGA can also be used to boost income for the school by being hired out to local sporting teams who would otherwise have limited or no access to facilities at their own clubs. This is particularly useful for community and amateur sports teams as it means they can practice all year round without having to wait for the weather to improve.
